Modern school trends that may be causing more harm than good

Education has always been a field driven by good intentions.

Educators, policymakers, and administrators continually seek innovative approaches to better serve students and prepare them for an increasingly complex world. Yet sometimes, the very trends designed to enhance learning can create unintended consequences that may actually harm the students they’re meant to help.

Beyond physical ailments like obesity, poor circulation, spinal issues, bad posture, headaches, and vision problems, technology also affects psychological well-being. This can manifest as distraction, anxiety, and even depressive disorders.

The most prominent trend reshaping classrooms today is the extensive integration of digital technology. While educational technology promises enhanced engagement and personalized learning, mounting evidence suggests we may have rushed headlong into a digital transformation without fully considering its implications.

Screen time overload

According to the American Academy of Child & Adolescent Psychiatry, on average, children aged 8 to 18 in the United States spend 7 1/2 hours each day watching or using screens. This dramatic increase correlates with numerous concerning health outcomes, including obesity, depression, anxiety, reduced aerobic fitness, diminished self-esteem, and poorer academic achievement.

The erosion of essential skills

Technology’s pervasive presence in classrooms is inadvertently undermining fundamental abilities. Students increasingly struggle with handwriting as typing becomes the dominant form of written communication. This shift affects more than just penmanshipโ€”a study published in the National Institutes of Health indicates that handwriting activates different areas of the brain than typing, potentially impacting cognitive development and learning retention.

While there are certainly benefits to using these devices, such as increased productivity and connectivity, there are also negative consequences that can greatly impact our physical and mental health.

Staring at screens for prolonged periods can lead to eye fatigue, dryness, irritation, headaches, and even blurred vision. This is due to the high levels of blue light emitted from screens, which can disrupt our sleep-wake cycle.

The health implications of modern educational trends extend far beyond academic performance. Excessive screen time is associated with eye strain, poor posture, and sleep disturbances. The blue light emitted by devices can disrupt circadian rhythms, affecting sleep quality and overall health.

Mental health concerns are equally serious. A study published in Frontiers in Public Health shows that technology overuse correlates with increased rates of depression, anxiety, and elevated levels of stress among students. The constant stimulation and instant gratification provided by digital devices may be rewiring young brains in ways we’re only beginning to understand.

The pressure cooker effect

Modern schools have become “pressure cookers” where student and teacher stress feed off each other. The push to integrate multiple new technologies, meet digital learning benchmarks, and maintain engagement in screen-heavy environments creates unprecedented stress for educators. A 2018 study found that more than 9 in 10 elementary school teachers report being “highly stressed.”

This educator’s stress directly impacts students, creating a cycle in which stressed teachers struggle to provide the calm, supportive environment that students need to thrive. Meanwhile, students face their own pressures from constant digital stimulation, social media comparisons, and the erosion of traditional stress-relief activities like recess and art programs.

Distraction in disguise

Classroom technology, intended to enhance engagement, often becomes a source of distraction. Students with devices in class frequently access social media, games, or other non-educational content during lessons. This diminishes attention spans and lowers academic performanceโ€”the opposite of technology’s intended effect.

Teachers report struggling to compete with the instant gratification and entertainment value of digital devices, finding it increasingly difficult to maintain student focus on traditional learning activities.

The teacher training gap

A critical factor in the negative impact of technology is the lack of adequate teacher preparation. Many schools implement new technologies without providing educators with sufficient training to use them effectively. This creates a situation where well-intentioned tools become sources of frustration and inefficiency, rather than tools for learning enhancement.

Without proper training, teachers often use technology as a “time filler” rather than a meaningful educational tool, missing opportunities to harness its potential benefits while exposing students to its drawbacks.
