A new study out of Denmark finds that men with better sperm quality at young ages seem to live longer than those who have weak swimmers. Before you ask the men in your life to provide semen samples for predictive purposes, however, you should know that researchers still don’t understand why this association exists or what it means. (Other than, you know, the obvious: healthy men make healthy sperm and healthy men tend to live longer connection.)
Missouri voters want access to abortion. We know that because in November they voted in favor of a constitutional amendment guaranteeing the right to abortion and other reproductive health decisions. Missouri lawmakers disagree.

C. Everett Koop, the Surgeon General under President Ronald Reagan, was a controversial figure from the moment of his nomination. A pioneering pediatric surgeon, Koop was adamantly anti-abortion. Dr. Koop once said, “How could I ever accept the destruction of the unborn after a career devoted to the repair of imperfect newborns, knowing the joy and fulfillment they brought to their families?”

Tampons have been a regulated medical device since the 1980s when a series of toxic shock deaths raised questions about their safety. Companies need FDA permission to sell them in the United States. That’s not usually a problem because there’s not a lot of variety in tampons. Some have a plastic applicator, some have a cardboard one, some have none, but for the most part they are a cylindrical wad of cotton with a string.
Two new studies show that the fall of Roe v. Wade has changed young people’s reproductive and residential behaviors. Researchers at George Washington University found that rates of permanent sterilization for both women and men went up everywhere after the Dobbs decision in 2022 with more increase seen in states that restrict abortion.
We are less than ten days into the new year and a little more than ten days out from the new Trump Administration. In my last post, I said I had no interest in analyzing the year we’d just experienced or making predictions for this next one. I stand by that.
