10 Countries Where They ARE Eating the Cats and Dogs

They’re eating the cats. They’re eating the dogs.” We all heard the unsubstantiated lie parroted by Donald Trump during the debate and watched the firestorm that followed… and it got us thinking. Exactly where do they eat cats and dogs?

While many societies view these animals primarily as companions, in some parts of the world, they are considered a source of food. The consumption of dog and cat meat is a practice that sparks intense debate worldwide.

These are ten countries where the consumption of dogs and cats occurs, offering insights into the cultural, historical, and legal contexts that shape these practices. Please note: Haiti is NOT on this list.

China is the world’s largest consumer of dog meat, with an estimated 10 million dogs and 4 million cats slaughtered annually for human consumption. The practice has deep historical roots, dating back thousands of years. However, attitudes are changing, particularly in urban areas. In 2020, Shenzhen and Zhuhai became the first mainland Chinese cities to ban dog and cat meat consumption.

Vietnam

Vietnam is the second-largest consumer of dog meat globally. An estimated 5 million dogs are slaughtered each year for human consumption. Dog meat is considered a delicacy and is often consumed with rice wine. Many believe it has medicinal properties and brings good fortune.

South Korea

In South Korea, dog meat dishes are known as “Gaegogi“. The country has an estimated 17,000 dog farms 1. However, there’s growing opposition to the practice, especially among younger generations. In 2022, a poll showed that 87.5% of South Koreans do not eat dog meat, and 56% support a ban.

Indonesia

While less than 5% of Indonesia’s population consumes dog meat, the practice persists in certain regions. The trade is particularly controversial due to concerns about animal cruelty and public health, especially regarding the spread of rabies.

Dog meat consumption in the Philippines is more common in northern regions. The dish known as “asocena” features dog meat as the main ingredient. Despite laws prohibiting the trade and consumption of dog meat, enforcement can be inconsistent.

Thailand

Thailand officially banned the slaughter and consumption of dogs and cats in 2014 with the Cruelty Prevention and Welfare of Animal Act. However, the illegal trade persists, with dogs often smuggled to neighboring countries.

Taiwan

In 2017, Taiwan became the first Asian country to completely ban the consumption and sale of dog and cat meat. Violators face significant fines of up to $8,200, public shaming, and possible prison time.

Surprisingly, dog meat consumption isn’t limited to Asia. In 2014, it was reported that about 3% of the Swiss population, primarily in rural areas, consumed dog and cat meat. This practice was particularly associated with Christmas traditions in certain regions.

Nigeria

Cambodia

While not as widely reported as some other countries, Cambodia is part of the regional dog meat trade in Southeast Asia. Dogs are often smuggled across borders to supply demand in neighboring countries.

The consumption of dog and cat meat remains a complex and contentious issue, intertwining cultural practices, ethical considerations, and evolving legal frameworks. As global awareness increases and more countries implement stricter animal welfare laws, the practice faces increasing scrutiny. However, addressing this issue requires sensitivity to cultural differences while prioritizing animal welfare and public health concerns. Moving forward, a combination of legislative action, public education, and cultural dialogue will be crucial in navigating this controversial topic.
