12 Everyday Items You’re Probably Using Incorrectly

You mean to tell me….. I have been doing these 12 things wrong everyday?

Sometimes, the little things we use every day have hidden design features or intended uses that go unnoticed. Here are 12 items most people don’t realize they’re using incorrectly—and tips on how to get the most out of them.

1. Bobby Pins

Most people slide bobby pins into their hair with the wavy side up. But actually, the wavy side should face down against your scalp, providing a better grip. When positioned this way, the grooves hold onto hair more effectively, preventing slippage throughout the day.

2. Toothpaste

If you’re covering your toothbrush with a full stripe of toothpaste, you’re probably using too much. Most dental professionals recommend a pea-sized amount. Using excess toothpaste doesn’t necessarily lead to cleaner teeth, and it can also create too much foam, making brushing uncomfortable and encouraging people to stop brushing too soon.

3. Ketchup Bottles

If you’ve ever struggled to get ketchup out of a glass bottle, there’s an easier way. Instead of hitting the bottom, tap the “57” logo on the neck of the Heinz ketchup bottle. This spot is designed to be the perfect point to apply pressure, allowing the ketchup to flow out smoothly.

4. Gas Pump Nozzles

Many gas pump nozzles have a “lock” feature to keep gas flowing without holding down the handle, but some people overlook it. While it’s there for convenience, it’s also practical for safety. Using this feature minimizes the risk of gas spills and frees your hands so you can keep an eye on the pump.

5. Aluminum Foil and Plastic Wrap Boxes

Aluminum foil and plastic wrap boxes often come with perforated tabs on the sides that you’re supposed to press in. These tabs hold the roll in place, preventing it from slipping out while you pull. Many people don’t realize they’re there and end up struggling with rolls that slide out.

6. Blenders

If you’re adding ingredients in random order, you may be making it harder on your blender than necessary. The proper method is to add liquids first, followed by soft ingredients, and then harder ingredients last. This layering helps the blender blades work smoothly, ensuring an even blend without overworking the motor.

7. Toilet Seat Covers

The paper toilet seat covers in public restrooms have a flap in the center that should hang in the bowl when you set it down. Most people place it backward, where the flap sticks up and doesn’t provide coverage. The flap hanging down helps the cover flush properly and keeps it in place.

8. Q-Tips

Contrary to popular belief, Q-tips were never intended to be used inside the ear canal. The packaging actually advises against it, as it can push earwax deeper and even damage the eardrum. Instead, they’re intended for cleaning the outer ear, or for use in makeup and crafts.

9. Reusable Shopping Bags

Using reusable bags isn’t just about bringing them to the store. After each use, they should be washed regularly to prevent bacteria buildup from foods and other items. Skipping the wash can lead to contamination, especially with bags that carry produce, meats, or dairy products.

10. Soda Can Tabs

The hole in a soda can tab isn’t just for pulling the tab open; it’s also a straw holder. After opening the can, turn the tab so the hole aligns over the opening, and you can use it to hold a straw in place, preventing it from floating around or falling out of the can.

Understanding these small tricks and corrections can make daily tasks easier, safer, and sometimes more efficient. The next time you use one of these items, give these tips a try and see the difference!

11. Cooking Pot Handles

Many cooking pots and pans have a hole at the end of the handle, which is often thought to be just for hanging. However, it’s also designed to hold a stirring spoon. This keeps the spoon handy and prevents mess on your countertop. Just place the spoon handle through the hole, and let it rest over the pot.

12. Laundry Detergent Caps

Laundry detergent caps often have measuring lines inside them, but many people fill the cap to the top, which usually results in using too much detergent. Using the proper line for your load size not only cleans clothes effectively but also helps your detergent last longer and prevents excess buildup in your machine.
